This competition centres on designated Chinese-language repertoire, comprising Chinese art songs and formally authorised original Shen Yun compositions. Contestants are asked to build on authentic bel canto technique while demonstrating clear Chinese diction, complete phrasing, purity of tone, understanding of the text, and restrained emotional expression.
Chinese art song brings the tones, vowels, consonants and poetic imagery of the language into classical singing. A singer must not only produce a beautiful sound, but let the audience understand the words, feel the phrase, and hold a clear and dignified balance between colour, breath and emotion.
These works are not only competition material. They are an opportunity for singers to deepen their artistry through language, cultural depth and vocal training.
Rooted in Chinese poetry and the art song tradition, valuing linguistic rhythm, poetic understanding, phrasing, style, and expression that is restrained yet sincere.
Included in this year’s designated repertoire under formal authorisation from the rights holder. These works ask the singer to build on authentic vocal technique, understand the text, and convey a calm, luminous, dignified and pure artistic character.
Perform one designated Chinese piece.
Perform two designated Chinese pieces. The repertoire must not repeat that of the preliminary round.
Perform two designated Chinese pieces. Pieces may be the same as those performed in the preliminary or semi-final rounds.
Duration Perform each piece at the full length of the designated score. No cuts, extensions or structural changes are permitted without the organizer’s written consent.
All competition repertoire must be selected from the list below. Voice-part groupings are for reference only; contestants may choose pieces suited to their own range and preferred edition.
